Juhye Choi - EAP2(A) summary response essay #2

The decreasing of krill and how we prevent the problems

According to ‘Crucial resource at risk’ Doyle said that krill is smaller than any other species but they are the most plentiful species in the world. Krill living in Antarctica is on the bottom of the food chain and many predators depend on it. But the amount of krill seems to have decreased because of its usefulness. After humans found out about krill’s usefulness, people started to fish them more and more. Against this concern, the fishers claim that they are fishing krill in a sustainable way. Another problem is that an amount of krill is threatened by global warming. It is a big problem that we do not know clearly how global warming affects the amount of krill.

If the amount of krill decreased, many species at the top of food chain are threatened, and this threat is connected to the crisis of environment. We have to know clearly the reason krill has decreased in order to prevent it and protect it. First of all, we should make clear the reason krill has decreased.

The first reason krill has decreased is that humans are over-fishing it. Nowadays krill is using many parts of human life. We use it for food, pharmaceuticals, fish’s feed, colorants etc. After people found out that fish oil is good for health, people wanted more krill because krill is very good material for fish oil. And people made new nets and vessels that made the fishing easier. If we keep fishing krill more and more, eventually we will break down the food chain in the ocean and environment.

Another reason is global warming. We cannot exactly know how global warming affects krill and the food chain. But we can predict it through the strange phenomena that we see nowadays. For example, high temperature makes algae on the surface of the ocean; it blocks sunlight. Without sunlight, oxygen in the water decreases. Finally global warming makes krill unable to breathe and kills it.

We have to find how we can protect krill and species. We have to supervise krill fishing and limit the amount of krill that fishermen can fish in a year. And we must change our thought about global warming. Global warming is definitely more serious than we had thought. The first victim will be krill or any other species in the bottom of the food chain; eventually the last victim will be human. So, to protect krill is to save human nature and environment.

We have to remember that human being is on the top of the food chain. The species becoming extinct will be the human being. Therefore we have to keep an eye on the environment where we live and try to protect it.
